The CEO of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Dr Toni Aubynn, has reaffirmed that the Petroleum Hub Project is being developed in full compliance with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

Dr Aubynn made these remarks during an interview at the recently concluded African Energy Technology Conference 2026, where energy experts, policymakers and industry leaders gathered to discuss the future of Africa’s energy sector amid growing global uncertainties within the oil and gas industry.

According to him, the Corporation remains committed to ensuring that this ambitious project is executed responsibly and sustainably in line with international best practices.

“The Petroleum Hub Project is ESG compliant. It is highly sensitive and fully aware of the need to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere. Therefore, in terms of the project’s energy requirements, we will use gas instead of crude oil to power our key infrastructure,” he stated.

He further added that, as part of the Corporation’s commitment to the global green energy transition, PHDC is also exploring blue and green hydrogen as alternative sources of power within the hub.

“ We are actively also investigating blue hydrogen and green hydrogen as possible sources of energy within the hub” he said

Dr. Aubynn also disclosed that trees will be used instead of metal structures for boundary demarcation. According to him, this approach is intended to ensure that the project  focuses on the Green Revolution agenda

Touching on the broader significance of this initiative, Dr Aubynn described the Petroleum Hub Project as one of Ghana’s most strategic industrial projects, with the potential to position the country as a leading petroleum and petrochemical hub within sub-Saharan Africa. He explained that the project is expected to boost local industrialisation, create employment opportunities and strengthen Ghana’s energy resilience.

He therefore called on stakeholders, investors and the general public to support the vision of the Petroleum Hub Project, emphasising that the Corporation remains focused on building a world-class energy infrastructure that aligns with global sustainability standards while driving economic growth and national development.

About the Petroleum Hub Project
The Petroleum Hub Project will be located in Jomoro, in Ghana’s Western Region. The hub will comprise: Three refineries with a total capacity of 900,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD), five petrochemical plants with a minimum capacity of 90,000 BPSD. Storage tanks with a cumulative capacity of 10 million cubic meters and at least two jetties to support import and export activities.
The project is poised to position Ghana as a leading petroleum and petrochemical hub in Africa, enhancing regional energy security and economic integration.
