The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Dr Toni Aubynn, has called for increased inclusion and empowerment of women within Africa’s energy, mining, and industrial sectors, emphasising that the continent’s future growth and industrial transformation must be driven by diversity, skills development, and equal opportunity.

Speaking at the Africa Energy Technology Conference (AETC) 2026, Dr. Aubynn highlighted the critical role women continue to play across various sectors of the economy and stressed the need for more intentional efforts to create pathways for women to participate in leadership, technical operations, engineering, and strategic decision-making within the energy industry.

According to Dr Aubynn, Africa’s energy future must be built on inclusion, industrialisation, and a balanced transition that allows all groups, particularly women and young people, to actively contribute to national and continental development.

He noted that women have consistently demonstrated professionalism, focus, discipline, and operational excellence in industries traditionally considered male-dominated.

Drawing from his experience in the mining, oil and gas sectors, Dr Aubynn observed that women entrusted with technical responsibilities, including the operation of large industrial equipment and heavy-duty machinery, have shown remarkable levels of commitment, precision, and responsibility.

“When women are given the opportunity, they perform exceptionally well across technical and operational roles,” he stated, adding that the industry must continue creating enabling environments that encourage greater female participation and advancement.

Dr Aubynn further emphasised that beyond representation, there is a need for sustained investment in practical training, engineering development, vocational education, and technology transfer to adequately prepare young Africans, especially women, for opportunities emerging within the evolving energy and industrial landscape.

“As industries evolve, we must ensure that our young people and women  are trained with the practical and technical knowledge needed to compete globally and contribute meaningfully to industrial growth,” he noted

Dr. Aubynn also reaffirmed PHDC’s commitment to sustainable industrial development, environmental stewardship, and strategic investment partnerships aimed at positioning Ghana and Africa for long-term economic transformation and energy security.

About the Petroleum Hub Project
The Petroleum Hub Project will be located in Jomoro, in Ghana’s Western Region. The hub will comprise: Three refineries with a total capacity of 900,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD), five petrochemical plants with a minimum capacity of 90,000 BPSD. Storage tanks with a cumulative capacity of 10 million cubic meters and at least two jetties to support import and export activities.
The project is poised to position Ghana as a leading petroleum and petrochemical hub in Africa, enhancing regional energy security and economic integration.
