The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Dr Toni Aubynn, has described the petroleum hub project as yet another opportunity for Ghana to assert its leadership and reputation as a pacesetter in Africa.
Speaking on JoyNewsโ AM Show on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Dr Aubynn lamented the absence of a complex petroleum and petrochemical hub on the African continent.
He noted that while other continents have pioneered the development of such monumental infrastructure, Africa has yet to establish one and that the establishment of a petroleum hub in the region is long overdue.
Dr Aubynn believes that Ghanaโs attempt at building a petroleum hub must be welcomed with utmost optimism and viewed as a display of the countryโs bold vision and desire to set the pace for countries on the continent.
โThis will be the first and only petroleum hub on the African continent, and the time has come for Africa to establish its own. All other continents have petroleum hubs, except Africa. This project is important and will be transformative, particularly considering that Singaporeโa nation comparable in size to Accra, yet producing no oilโhosts the worldโs third-largest petroleum hub.
Having visited Singaporeโs petroleum hub during the Africa Singapore Business Forum (ASBF) in August, Dr Aubynn expressed absolute confidence that Ghanaโs petroleum hub represents a transformative solution to the energy sector challenges and employment issues facing Ghana and Africa at large.
Dr Aubynn stated that briefings by the Singaporean authorities during the tour indicate that Phase One of their project created over 80,000 jobs in the country. He believes that Ghanaโs unique situation, particularly in terms of technology and modern, sophisticated equipment, means that the job creation numbers for Ghana will be significantly higher than those of Singapore.
In a separate interview on Onua TV, Dr Aubynn described the Petroleum Hub project as a quintessential and archetypal 24-hour economy initiative.
According to Dr Aubynn, the Petroleum Hub project is designed to operate on a 24-hour model, aligning with the flagship economic policy of President John Dramani Mahamaโs administration
โWe are committed to realising the Presidentโs vision of creating jobs for the nationโs youth. The Petroleum Hub is a classic 24-hour economy project. The hub will operate around the clock,โ he said.
